You gotta love Turkey Trots! The enthusiasm at the Woodlands GE Turkey Trot is awesome. The race has grown to over 4,000 people, and brings out many volunteers and spectators. The first event is the kid's one mile run. Sarah (my 5 year old) decided she wanted to run this year since her friends Douglas, Jack, and Eme were running. However, when the gun went off, Sarah refused to let go of my hand. She ran the first few minutes clinging to me, and complaining about how tired she was. That is so unlike Sarah!!! I told her we could certainly walk, and I did not push her at all!! I really wanted her to enjoy the event and feel happy when she finished. After the half-mile turn around, she grew a little more confident and started running a little faster. By the end, she was sprinting! She wore her medal all week and now says she had a lot of fun.
I probably complained about as much as she did during the first half of my race. I felt really good at the start, considering I didn't taper near as much as I had wanted to (I blame Tim Monk's long run on my lack of taper!) The second mile I had some GI issues (how does that happen in a short race??!!). I struggled a little through miles 2 and 3, and then felt better for the last two miles. I have been doing a lot of base training lately, so I can't complain about my performance for the short five mile race. I finished second female overall in a time of 30:18. However, I know the Woodlands Cross Country girls weren't racing as hard as they could, so I probably didn't deserve second place. :)
The YMCA is a sponsor of this race (and my employer), and they did a fantastic job helping out this year! Thank you to Shani for watching Sarah during my race. Shani rocks!
